    Biography :

One of the strongest singles on Slim's (Irv Rose)Time Square Label was released in May, 1963; The Decoys "It Gonna Be Alright", produced specifically tor Times by Al Browne and Slim. The Decoys story is typical of many groups of that period; they met vet arranger and producer (Crests on Joyce) Al Browne by responding to an ad in the paper. Hailing from the Melrose section of the Bronx in New York Connie Strachan "Questell" (lead), Herbert Joseph (1st Tenor), Isaac Gordon (2nd Tenor), Malcolm Quick (Baritone) and Marian Green (Bass) were kids with a dream. They grew up listening to the Harptones, Cadillacs, and Valentines and knew it was still possible in 1963 to go places with the group sound.

    The Decoys (2)

"It Gonna Be Alright" was one of the most popular Times Square 45's; it was known beyond its disappointing sales the first time around. The Decoys followed with "Tomorrow" and "I Want Only You", recorded for Aanko in 1964 and subsequently sold to Time Square. The group appeared in oldies shows at the Village Gate, Brooklyn Baby Grand, Carlton Terrace, and, of course, Palisades Park where Connie was so nervous she couldn't remember her musical key.

THE 1970S RECORDINGS WHICH THIS SITE ATTRIBUTES TO THE DECOYS ARE NOT BY THE DECOYS.

THEY WERE RECORDED IN EARLY 1973 AT ROSSI STUDIOS (OFF AVETUE T) IN BROOKLYN, NY. I WAS THERE WITH AL BROWNE WHEN THE RECORDINGS WERE MADE. (AL BROWNE HELD "OPEN" AUDITIONS WHEN A NUMBER (10-15  ARTISTS; NOT ALL GROUPS) APPEARED TO SHOW OFF THEIR TALENTS. AL RECORDED ALL THESE SESSIONS; SOME WERE LATER SOLD TO "COLLECTOR" LABELS (LIKE VINTAGE).

THE FEMALE SINGER JUST HAPPENED TO HAVE THE SAME FIRST NAME (CONNIE) AS THE DECOYS GREAT LEAD, CONNIE QUESTELL. WHEN I SAW THE NAME "CONNIE" ON THE LIST OF SINGERS WHO WERE TO APPEAR AT THE SESSION, I ASKED AL BROWNE IF "CONNIE" WAS CONNIE QUESTEL. AL'S ANSWER WAS SIMPLE AND RIGHT TO THE POINT: "HELL NO, CONNIE QUESTEL COULD SING."

THE MALE VOICE ON THE 2 RCORDINGS WAS THAT OF AL BROWNE; THEY WERE OVER DUBBED AFTER THE SESSION.

I KNOW THAT THESE RECORDINGS APPEAR ON THE "ALJON MASTERS" CDS, BUT THE PRODUCER OF THOSE CDS HAD NO REAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THESE RECORDINGS. (THE EXCELLENT LINER NOTES FOR THE CD WERE ORIGINALLY WRITTEN BY BOBBY OSTROWSKI AND HAD APPEARED IN BIM BAM BOOM MAGAZINE IN THE EARLY 1970S; THEY WERE NOT WRITTEN BY THE CDS' PRODUCER,)

THE CDS WERE PRODUCED IN GERMAN AFTER AL BROWNE'S DEATH. I AM NOT AWARE THAT ANY OF THE RECORDINGS USED ON THE 3 GERMAN CDS WERE EVER PAID FOR. I KNOW THAT THE PRODUCER USED RECORDINGS THAT I OWN WITHOUT PAYMENT OR ASKING PERMISSION.
