Al ’TNT’ Bragg                                                                   The Five Stars

The group entered a local talent contest which they duly won, rapidly becoming one of the hottest groups in the Dallas area. The Five Notes were signed up by agent Mike Coggs and appeared on shows with groups like The Five Keys and The Spaniels, and in 1955 they made their recording debut on the Chess label with the release of the single Park Your Love/Show Me The Way (Chess 1614).

A change of name to The Five Masks and another single on the Jan label, Polly Molly/Forever And A Day (Jan 101) were to follow before the group, now called The Five Stars, signed for B.B. Kings short lived Blues Boy Kingdom label.

Although a single was released, Hey Juanita/So Lonely Baby (Blues Boy Kingdom 106), B.B.s discovery by the white blues market and the subsequent upsurge in his popularity led to the demise of the label and the groups eventual return to Dallas where their popularity guaranteed them regular work and even an outstanding performance in the 1957 movie, Rock Baby, Rock It, along with Roscoe Gordon.

1954 - Oh Baby Oh  (Apollo)

Biography :

This Jumping Jacks group formed in North Carolina in 1942. They practiced for quite some time before making local appearances. More than ten years passed before they made a recording for the Apollo subsidiary label, Lloyds. It should also be noted that they were from the same neighborhood as the Five Royales. This group called themselves the Jumping Jacks because of their exuberance on stage. This was a very demonstrative and dramatic quartet.

They recorded four songs in April 1953 but only two sides  were released.Unfortunately, neither of the two released songs did well and the group obviously felt that changing their name to the Romeos might change their luck.

Biography :

Formed in high school in Englewood, New Jersey, the group consisted of Bob Lea (lead), his brothers Bill (baritone) and Wendel (second tenor), Curtis Norris (bass) and Ervin Watson (first tenor). When they first got together in 1954, they called themselves the Robins. But once they learned of the West Coast group by that name, they started looking for a different name for the group.

While Bill was doing his homework on Shakespeare one day, he read about the river Avon in England and the name "clicked." In 1955 they went to New York City to see Blanche "Bea" Kaslin, owner of Hull Records, and they auditioned right in her office. Liking what she heard, she signed the Avons to her label. Before their second rel  ease (Baby, 1957), bass Curtis Norris joined the army and was replaced by Franklin Cole.  Cole enlisted after their third release (You Are So Close to Me, 1958) to be replaced by bass George Coleman, who went into the army two records later.By 1962, baritone Bill Lea went to Uncle Sam and was replaced by Sunny Harley for the Avons' last record, A Girl to Call My Own. Soon after this song's release, the group brokeup.

1960 - Handy Man / Everybody Rock (Apollo 541)

Biography :

When Jimmy Jones was around twelve years old he moved from his native Birmingham, Alabama, to New York City. At that time he was already an accomplished tap dancer, but singing was equally important to him. Role models were Louis Jordan and the Ink Spots and later especially Clyde McPhatter and Jackie Wilson.

Early in 1955 he joined a vocal group, the Sparks of Rhythm (originally the Berliners), who landed a recording contract with Apollo Records in July 1955. Four songs were recorded at their first session, three of them led by Jimmy. When the two resulting singles went nowhere, Jones left the Sparks of Rhythm to form his own group, the Savoys, soon renamed the Pretenders. The Sparks Of Rhythm, now without Jimmy, recorded four songs for Apollo, among them Jones's composition "Handy Man".
