Biography :

One of the few vocal group to have escaped the scrutiny of record researchers, the Five Chanels were the protégés of Julius Dixon, a veteran songwriter whose successes included (as co-writer) the Chordettes' 1958 smash 'Lollipop' and Bill Halley's 'Dim Dim the Lights'. Dixon dabbled in all aeras of the music business and in 1958, he launched the Deb Label as a vehicle for his protégé, 14 year-Old Beverly Ann Gibson who had won the amateur hour at the Apollo theatre.

She in turn introduced Dixon to the Chanels who hailed from her hometown of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The group were composed by Sharon Scott, Gwynn Speller, Donza Drummond, Dolores Stringer and Virgil Hammond.Early pressings of 'the reason' credited the Chanels but this was changed to the Five Chanels after rival record boss, Georges Goldner, complained that the name was too close to that of the Channels, a group he had recorded for his Gone Label. And not only that, but the Chanels' lead singer, Sharon Scott, sounded similar to Arlene Smith ot the Chantels, another of Goldner's groups.

'The Reason' benefited from some immediate plugs on American Bandstand, the nation's most influential TV pop show and Dixon set up a distribution deal with ABC Paramount Records in anticipation of the hoped for hit. However, Dick Clark who hosted Bandstand, and had tried to acquire 'The Reason' for Swan Records, a Philadelphia Label with which he was associated, promptly lost interest causing 'The Reason' to stall at #98. A subsequent Release was credited to Virgil & the Four Chanels. In 1962, Julius Dixon will call the group again, without Virgil. The girls renamed "The Chelmars" recorded "Jigsaw Puzzle" b/w "Confess" released by Select Records.

Biography :

On November 19, 1956, from New Haven, came Lead singer Roger Koob and the Premiers. Brother Billy, Frank Polimus and Gus Delros took their name from "Premier Theater", a top T.V. Show at the time. Brothers Roger and Billy Koob students at Amity High in Woodbridge. The group performed locally and gained a loyal following. Roger was writing original songs for the group "Oh Theresa", "Linda", "I'll Wait For You". It was at the last moment before an audition with Leo Rogers that he penned the novelty tune "Jolene".

It was this tune that began the groups recording career on the Alert label, a subsidiary of ABC Records. New Haven-area radio stations played the record regularly, and "Jolene"reached the Top 10 on WAVZ's "Giant 13" survey in January 1959. This record's success led the Premiers to an Alan Freed show and an extensive tour through the East Coast, as well a "Star of 59 Show" all through Canada.

Personnel and label changes followed with Joe Vence and Gordy Corvtmanche coming into the group and eventually Johnny Roddi replacing Gordy as they moved to Fury. After a mildly successful release on Fury in 1960 ("Pigtails Eyes of Blue"), The Premiers had their biggest hit and most successful year in 1961 with their recording of "She Gives Me Fever".

  The disc topped the charts in the East, including a stint at the number one position on the "Fabulous 40" survey of WNHC in New Haven in May, 1961.   A tour with Dick Clark and an appearance on "American Bandstand" also increased their popularity.  Many Commitments and engagements kept the group busy. They were now being managed by Jim Gribble who would suddenly die of a heart attack. Their next single was due to be released on the Ember label when they were informed that another group had the name the Premiers and they had to change theirs.

So was born Roger & The Travellers, in 1961. Before Gribbles death he had Roger and the group contracted to sing background on four songs for Johnny Maestro who had just broke with the Crests. In 1962, Roger teamed up with Bill Baker (Who formally sang with the Five Satins and the Chestnuts) recording as the Buddies.

Soon the group would find a new label as well as a new name "The Frontiers". Roger's brother, Billy had left the group to serve in the military and was replaced by Charlie of the Academics (Another local Connecticut group). Now at Philips records working with Van McCoy, Roger and grouper told to style themselves much like the popular Four Seasons of Vee Jay Records. After two releases, Philips signed the Four Seasons and the Frontiers were sent packing although they would have one last release in 1967 . At this time, with Roger Singing lead, the frontiers consisted of Jerry Warner Jr., Phil Vallie, Skip Bianco, Fred Maffeo and Andy Smith.

Biography :

The Masquerades were formed in 1957 as the Elpeccios and originally consisted of Howard, Charles, and Robert Scott, and cousin Jesse "Chico"Golden. Golden and Robert Scott soon dropped out, and in early 1958 the group reorganized as the Masquerades, consisting of Howard, Charles, and Tommie Scott, Jimmy Thompson, and Ike Hickman. Robert Scott entered the professional boxing ranks as a welterweight, fighting in the same stable as world junior welterweight champion Eddie Perkins. The group went down to St. Louis to record two sides for Ike Turner on the Joyce label, "Summer Sunrise" backed with "Nature's Beauty." But nothing happened for the group.

The Masquerades were discovered by Entrepreneur Don Talty in 1958 singing in a North Side nightclub. At the time, the group consisted of Howard, Walter, Charles, and Tommie Scott, plus Ike Hickman and guitarist Howard Taylor. Jimmy Thompson had left the group to take up guitar, and years later would emerge as a well-respected Chicago blues performer  Jimmy Johnson. Thompson changed his name to "Johnson" after his brother Syl had achieved fame as a soul singer under the name "Syl Johnson." The following year Buddy Scott replaced Taylor on guitar and the group came out with "The Whip" backed with "Fanessa"  on the Boyd label. "The Whip" was intended to promote a dance and was considered the A side. Talty even had artwork done to show the dance steps, but nothing came of the record.

The Masquerades released "Mister Man" backed with "These Red Roses" in 1960 on the Formal label. No more records by the Masquerades were released for Talty. They continued on, and guitarists who worked for them in the following years included their old vocal mate, Jimmy Johnson, and his brother, Syl Johnson. Around 1963-64, the Masquerades called it quits as a vocal group, and like a phoenix rising from the ashes re-emerged as the Scott Brothers Band. Seaphus Howard Scott started a label called Al-Tog in Chicago working with several artists in the 1960s publishing several songs through his music publishing company (Scot-Tees Publishing Co.) and releasing them with record labels such as Numero One and Okeh!.

Biography :

Vocal trio from Benton , included Myrna Knight, Virginia Knight, and Karen Knight. Their older sisters, Thera, assisted by helping with arrangements and accompanying them on the piano. Calling themselves "The Knight Sisters" the trio sang for many church, civic club and other gatherings since 1956.

Their popularity also brought them appearances on local television programs. The Girls frequently sang at political rallies in the aera. In 1961, the sisters cut a record at the Owen Bradley Studio in Nashville (Tennessee).

One side of the disc features a novelty tune entitled "Wooden Head Willie". The other side of the record is "Confess" described as a slow "Tear-jerker".  The record, released in January on Tempwood V Label, has sold very well in Memphis, Dallas and other Southern cities. The girls are slated to make three more records on the Tempwood V Label. Unfortunately the girls did not register another single.

Biography :

Vocal group from Los Angeles, they auditioned for Mike Gradney, owner of Spry Records . He liked them and set up a recording session at which they did  "Rendezvous", "Drive-In Movie", "I've Cried Enough" and " Lotsa Lotsa Lovin". The single  "Rendezvous" B/W "Drive-In Movie" was issued up by Jaguar Records owned George Bennett. The Jaguar label was out of Manhattan. It was actually located in the famous Brill Building.

Biography :

The Fleetones were the secular incarnation of the Morfleet Brothers who recorded several gospel tracks for Bandera and its subsidiary Jericho Road. The line-up comprised Joseph, Nathaniel, Peter, Junius and Arthur Norfleet and George Taylor. Vi Muszynski, owner of Bandera Records, spotted their talent and inked them for what may well be their only recorded excursions outside the Gospel field and what fine doo whoppers they made, showing the polished harmonies they had developed over the years. Whether Vi persuades the group or whether they had always harbored desires to cross into the R&b field we will probably never know, but she also cut them on more familiar territory and issued four gospel tracks on the subsidiary Jerico Road. The Norfleet Brothers began singing on the family farm in Marion, AL. At first it was just two brothers (Peter and Arthur), but three other brothers soon joined. They could have formed a double-quintet with five additional female voices, as there were 15 Norfleet siblings on the farm (ten boys and five girls).

World War II caused a forced hiatus when the older brothers were drafted, splitting up the group, though the individual brothers kept sharp by singing with other groups. The brothers finished their duty by 1946 and regrouped to burn rubber all over the South and the Midwest. They soon settled in Chicago, IL, to take advantage of better jobs and opportunities for African-Americans. They still toured the gospel circuit, but made the Christ Temple Baptist Church their religious base. Despite all the siblings, The Norfleet Brothers weren't entirely family; Willie Wilson sung with them for a while and bass singer George Taylor was a long time member.

After leaving the group, Wilson spearheaded a weekly television show in Chicago, the Jubilee Showcase, which featured The Norfleet Brothers and other local and national gospel acts. The popular group recorded their first and only album, Shadrach, in 1964 on Checker Records, the 12-song LP featured their popular rendition of "Shadrach," their beautiful arrangement of "None But the Righteous," and an original composition "Live the Life." The out-of-print delight is hard to find but well worth the search. An R&B group, Little Ben & the Cheers, a hot local group who recorded a slew of singles that didn't hit, were comprised of the offspring of the various Nortleet Brothers.

Biography :

The Tassels emerged in northern New Jersey among such groups as the Shirelles, Joey D. & The Starlighters and the Four Seasons. The Tassels' patriotic hit To A Solider Boy was written by Mary Glen Gaudet, mother to John Gaudet and Rochelle Gaudet Alessi, the brother and sister pair who fronted the group. Both siblings were, ironically, born on patriotic days: Rochelle on Memorial Day and John on Flag Day.

   

The group worked and toured alongside Neil Sedaka, The Adressi Brothers, Duane Eddy and Joanne Campbell as well as many other stars of the 50's rock 'n roll scene. As one of Alan Freed's favorite groups of the Doo Wop era, The Tassels catapulted to stardom with their hit recording To a Soldier Boy. As well as climbing the radio charts, the group made several appearances on Alan Freed's television show worked with Bobby Darrin, who guest-hosted the show in Freed's absence.

   

It was after The Tassels' appearance on Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beechnut Show that To a Solider Boy began to soar. The song was a recording in its time and of its time. Its poignant sentiment hit home with many American women, mothers, and wives alike who had loved ones in military services overseas.

This song was recorded in 1959 along with other songs such as To a Young Lover, My Guy and I and its upbeat flipside The Boy for Me, which appeared with To a Solider Boy on the Billboard's Top 100 list. Today, with our young people going off to war again, the sentiment of To a Solider Boy remains as relevant as it was when rock n' roll was born.

Biography :

Just as The Andantes were Motown's female backing singers of note, so The Love-Tones were briefly their male equivalents. When the Teardrops dissolved after one single for Sampson in 1952/53, Stan Bracely & Carl Jones stayed together and with baritone Joe Miles  and second tenor Mickey Stevenson, they formed the Mello-dees. Initially, they backed Herman Griffin & Tony Clarke’s first single under the name of Tall Tonio for Mickey Stevenson's Stepp Records in 1960, but when Stevenson quit singing to concentrate on producing, they changed their name to the Love Tones and became the in-house male backing group.

Although their contributions were usually credited, they were seldom if ever allowed to release anything under their own name, with the result their contribution to Motown would be easy to overlook. However, Carl Jones, Mickey Stevenson, Joe Miles and Stan Bracely had recorded under their own name.

Whilst at Motown they appeared on recordings by Marvin Gaye (Soldier Boy), Henry Lumpkin (Mo Jo Hanna),  Gino Parks (For This I Thank You), Mary Wells on her big 1962 hits, “The One Who Really Loves You” and “You Beat Me To The Punch” and many other singers, sometimes credited. They exited Motown in 1962 and seemingly broke up thereafter, although they reformed for a series of recordings for Ian Levine's Motorcity label in the 1990s.

Biography :

In 1952, three sister, Terry, Phyllis and Annette stood before a microphone on Arthur Godfrey's "Talent Scout Show," and sang to an approving public. They won the contest, and as was Godfrey's custom, the girls, known as the Capri Sisters guested on Godfrey's radio and his then popular night-time program. "Arthur Godfrey and his Friends."

It was then that the Yonkers born and reared, DiCaprio sisters met the McGuire Sisters and they became a part of the latter team's night club act. They toured with the Mc-Guires for four years and they traveled all over the United States. The girls began their careers when Terry was 8, and Phyllis and Annette, who are twins, were 5. They were on Ted Mack , and then the Godfrey show, the Lind Hayes show and other top notch TV programs

  

The Girls have performed with the Dorseys, Jackie Gleason and Louis Prima and are three time winners on Ted Mack’s show. The Girls cut many singles for a large number of label; Jubilee, Cadence, Dot, Hanove, ABC Paramount, Warwick and Newtown. The first being " After School Rock" b/w "The Occarina Roll" on Jubilee.

In 1962, Richard Barrett apparently produced a session for Harold B. Robinson with the Capri Sisters [Newtown 5002]. Sides included “Fairy Tales” which Richard Barrett had used earlier for other artists and would use again, and “I Want You To Be My Boy,” a cover of the Teenagers’ record.  Frankie Lymon's "I Want You To Be My Girl" - changed the title for obvious reasons - and fashioned it for the new "Twist" craze.

The great rock arranger Sammy Lowe provided the girls with a Ray Charles' "What'd I Say" type of moving accompaniment. In 1964, The Exciters ("Tell Him") covered the Capris' with their own version of "I Want You To Be My Boy".

Biography :

This group was formed by teenage friends from the "Black Bottom" section of Detroit in the early 1950s. Bracely was visiting his parents and met Maurice Martin, who was living in the same apartment house. When Bracely told Martin of the Teardrops, Bracely, a pianist, took an interest and began showing up at their rehearsal sessions. They would sing and practice wherever they could find an echo: bathrooms, hallways, and so on. hey began performing at amateur shows and church functions.

They came in second in a 1953 amateur show across the river from Detroit in Windsor, Ontario. The winner was "Little" Willie John. The group was soon contacted by promoter Homer Jones, who asked them to get in touch with Sampson Records (whom he had spoken to) regarding the Teardrops. They recorded for a studio that was located in the rear of Sam's Record Shop. They heard their tune on Detroit radio for several weeks, but then it disappeared. As is usually the case, group members never received a cent, nor did they ever hear from Sampson Records again. Stan Bracely & Carl Jones would later evolve into Motown's Love-Tones. Carl Jones was killed in a barroom fight in the early 1960s.
