Biography :

The Debs were a Vocal group from Atlantic City who attended Atlantic City High school. Charlottia Gilbert was lead singer of This girl group (Charlottia Gilbert, Monique Forbes, Johnnie Lee Manning and Lynn Fields) who cut this excellent girl group sound "Danger Ahead" b/w "Just Another Fool" for Double L in 1963. The group would only stay together for a short time, in 1967, Charlottia Gilbert would record a single in her name with "Chances Go Round " and "Falling In Love With Him".

Biography :

Mario Madison (aka Mario Pizzuto) was a saxophonist and band leader from Scranton, Pennsylvania.  Vocal & instrumental group, Mario & the Flips performed for several years in clubs. He began performing in Pennsylvania in 1955 as Mario & The Five Flips. In 1957, with his group now a septet, he landed contracts in Florida and recorded a single for Ken Records based in Rochester, New York: "Oh Baby See How You Are" b/w "I Laughed At Love" as Mario Madison & The Flips.

The group would record two new singles, in 1959, first for "Cross Country" with "Once In Awhile" and "Nobody's Sweetheart Now"  and in 1961 for Decca "Twistin' Train" b/w "You Made Me Love You". From 1958 the group performed almost exclusively in New Jersey clubs until the mid-1970s. The group had several personnel changes over the years, going from trio, quartet to a septet.

Biography :

It is difficult to find informations on Jimmie Lewis & the Volumes. They are a New York group and are in no way related to the 1962 Detroit group that recorded "I Love You" for Chex Records. Jimmmie Lewis & The Volumes Recorded "In My Heart" b/w " I Saw A Cottage In My Dreams"  for Ivy Records. Ivy Records was set up in Sept 57 by Stan Feldman & Ed Portnoy. It was based out of 1697 Broadway, New York. Feldman had been in the jukebox biz for 21 years with Kingsboro Music, whilst Portnoy operated the Record Shack Jazz outlet. The lack of promotion from Ivy kept the record from breaking out nationwide. We can find the same Jimmie Lewis a few years later on Luck Records, another New York label with "Wishing Star" and "I Promise You".

Biography :

Not much is known about The Marlins. All is know that they were a white doo-wop group from Mobile, Alabama. Their Names are Bob Cantrell, Billy Alexander, Franklin E. Cobb, and Kirk Middleton. The Marlins have recorded only once in 1957 for the Sandy Record Company. Short-lived, yet influential, independent label founded in Mobile, Alabama by Paul DuBose and Johnny Bozeman in early 1957. It launched the careers of many artists such as Ray Sawyer, lead vocalist of Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show.

Biography :

In the early ’60s, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Harold Battiste (who had done some A&R for Specialty) formed the New Orleans-based AFO label with the intention of giving local artists a fairer deal via a Black-owned company. He initiated the first African-American musician-owned record label (All For One) and publishing company (At Last Pub. Co.). Only one true hit resulted, Barbara George’s “I Know” , but some solid New Orleans R&B was recorded during its brief time in operation. A year and a half ago before their recording session the Woods Brothers appeared and were runners-up on the Ted Mack Show.  The Woods Brothers recorded two song For At Last "To You My Love" and "Love, Love, Love".

Biography :

The Dreamtones were a three girl group from Pittsburgh. The Trio include Joanne Gillen, Judy Lanzo & Marian Yates. Joanne and Judy, each 19, are identical twins. Judy is the only one marrie. Marion is 18. The Twins meet Marian when they were attending Carrick High School a few years back. They Joined for the annual variety show with the school stages every October, and the comments on their teaming were so favorable that they have been together ever since.In 1957, the girl cut "Was I Dreaming / Say Hey Baby" for Mercury. Jim Drake, Lead singer of the Four Larks arranged "Was I Dreaming" for the Trio.

Biography :

In 1959, An Ithaca girl quartet has made its first professional record for national release. The girls  are  Sybil Love (18),Joyce Love (17), Patricia Scott (16)and Peggy Scott (17). All are still pupils In Ithaca High School. This girls quartet have been singing together since 1955, as the Four Buds, the girls sang as a church group. They have also performed in church concerts, as entertainment at fraternity affairs and for local groups such as  the United Fund, and in area talent and radio shows. Their record "No More, Tears" b/w "1 Love You Darling" was released by Valex records as Sybil Love and the Love Notes.

Biography :

The Delverts of Winston-Salem includes two lead singers, a supporting quartet and two accompanists. In 1962, The Delverts recording is "Listen For The Raindrops" featuring JL. Moore as the lead, backed by "The Love I Had” with Christopher McCoy as the lead. Herbert Hayes of 2512 Ansonia Street was their  manager. He is a former singer himself. The quartet includes Pearlie Smith, first tenor; Arthur Davis, second tenor; James Hamilton, baritone, and James Dean, bass. All members of the Delverts are teen-agers. Moore, McCoy and Hamilton attend Atkins High School, The boys have been singing together from 1960. They have appeared in talent shows, at dances and in other programs in various cities in this vicinity.. Permanent accompanists are Connie Slade on the piano andJames Mickles on drums; A WinstonSalem band, the Migrators, led by alto sax man Cary Cain, backs the Delverts on their first record Members of the band are John Tanner Jr., Sam Taylor and John Wright, tenor saxophone; James Lewis, trombone; Wesley Johnson, tenor guitar. Car! Ray Johnson, drums; Donald Officer, bass, and James Little, piano.

Biography :

Joe Lucas, 18. of Gary, a 1958 graduate of Biship Noll, got the idea of forming a musical group, and “The Unknowns” started out as a six-member aggregation by appearing on the program for Noll's 1957 Christmas party. Joe Lucas, working at Inland Steel Co, Indiana Harbor is the baritone singer. Other vocalists are John Clune, 18-year-old Noll senior from Gary ( first tenor); Al Burkett, 17, Noll senior, East Chicago (bass) and Bob Gawlikowski, 17. Noll senior, Pl, Hammond, (Second Tenor).

Lopeika wrote the music of "Crazy Daisy" and Lucas provided the lyrics. The Unknowns had it recorded, with “Dearest Darling” on the flip side, and it was released in November 1958. With "Crazy Daisy" The group have an appearance on a Chicago rock ‘n' roll television program.
