Biography :

Vocal group from the Bahamas originally (at least their first record was recorded in Nassau, Bahamas) They backed John Shaw on " Why Did You Leave Me " .

The group moved to Henry Stone label Mida Records , which also was based in Miami where they backed Donel Austin on "So Shy" as he Sensational Dellos. The group finally recorded his own record on Mida with "Lost Love" b/w "So Don't Go".

Biography :

Beginning in the early '60s, the Copiague-Amityville community made its share of contributions to popular music, including The Universals , enthusiastically adopted by Copiague High students as favorite sons. The Group consisted of six mens cut one single for festival in 1961 "Dreaming" & "Love Bound" and had an unreleased side "Kisses In My Dreams".

 In 1964, Freddie Miller, Tony Jones and Plinio Ruiz with Butch Poveromo from the Locomotions recorded  two songs  "Speak Words Of Love"  and "Before I Walk Out The Door" as The Fiats.

Biography :

Dante & The Evergreens disbanded in 1964 after Frank Rosenthal contracted an illness that lasted about six months and seriously curtailed the group’s touring. Frank returned to college on an athletic scholarship and even became a professional athlete for a time. Bill Young fooled around in music and movies for a while, but eventually left the business.

Tony Moon ended up in Nashville as a respected arranger, writer and producer. Donald "Dante" Drowty  with Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean fame... recorded in 1964 under the name of The Emerald City Bandits for Philips Records. "Come On Oz" and "Full Blown Caddy" bot written by Donald Drowty.

Biography :

The Invictors were a mixed group : 3 white and 2 black members. Following the breakup of the Honeybees, vocalist Barry Boswell met Ray Edwards of the Silhouettes, who was living in Reading from 1944 to 1956. By 1962, the Silhouettes had become loosely organized, and Edwards had been performing on his own. The three white members of the group were brothers Bill and Gene Yuhas, and Bobby Rohrbach on baritone.

Their sole release, Bee 1117 was put out in 1961, and featured Gene Yuhas on the A-side, "I’ll Always Care For You." The flip "I Don't Wanna Go" was written by Ray Edwards’s daughter, and features Edwards on the lead. The Invictors recorded these sides along with 3 others : "Carrie Lou", "Goodbye To Love" and "My Dream Girl", at Farraro’s Studio in the 400 Block Of Schuykill Ave., Reading.

The Termites were simply the Invictors minus Bobby Rohrbach, in 1963, Bee Records coupled an unreleased Invictors’ master, "Carrie Lou" which featured Barry Boswell on Lead with "Give Me Your Heart", a master from Pat Farraro’s Beck Music Company, and invented the name « Termites » for Bee 1825. "Give Me Your Heart" is not by the Invictors, but The Paramounts, featuring Wesley Parker who released another 45 on the Columbine Label in 1962. .

Biography :

First formed in 1956, originating from the corners of the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York. The original group consisted of Andy Moraglia, Donald Jones, Willie Calia, Phil Rao and Thomas Rock. The Chalets auditioned for ABC/Paramount Records and although that connection never materialized eventually they were signed to do two sides for the Tru-Lite label. They did one session, in 1957, which produced "Who’s Laughing Who’s Crying" and "Fat Mom-Mi-O". After the release of this 45, Willie Calia was approached by MGM Records to do solo recordings. Neither the Chalets nor Willie Calia's solo career survived. Although the group did not have major success with the recording, it was successful and in demand enough to be reissued twice in the early 1960's. The reissues were on the Dart and Musicnote labels. After the Chalets had broken up, Andy Moraglia sang with the Blendairs on Tin Pan Alley.

Biography :

Freddie Gorman (born Frederick Cortez Gorman, April 11, 1939 – June 13, 2006) was an American musician and record producer, most famous as a singer, songwriter for the Motown label in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was a native of Detroit, Michigan. A member of the Motown quartet The Originals, Freddie Gorman was also a vital unsung component of the Motown label's formative development. He co-wrote the label's first #1 pop hit "Please Mr. Postman", by the Marvelettes.

In 1964 the biggest selling group of all time, the Beatles released their version, and in 1975 the Carpenters took it back to #1 again. This was the second time in pop history (after "The Twist" by Chubby Checker) that a song reached #1 in the US twice. Freddie Gorman developed his potent bass harmonizing on local street corners, and was still in high school when he made his recorded debut on the Quailtones 1955 Josie Records. The Quailtones consisted of Freddie Gorman, Sonny Sanders, Johnny Franklin, James Martin and Ted Scruggs.

They made one obscure record for Josie Records in New York which was arranged through a local record store owner and part time Saxophone Player, Sax Kari.  Sax Kari and the Qualitones, "Roxanna" b/w "Tears Of Love", came and went without a trace, and soon after, the group disbanded. When that happened, Freddie Gorman and another of the group's members, Sonny Sanders, formed a group called the Fidelitones, which consisted of the two of them, Brian Holland and a singer nicknamed "Bosco" who lived over on the other side of town. As it turned out, Gorman happened to be Berry Gordy's mailman, and it wasn't long before he convinced Berry to listen to his group.

One year before Motown was started, Gordy recorded The Fidelitones for the Aladdin record label. This was also Berry's first encounter with Brian Holland . "Pretty Girl" b/w "Game Of Love" on Aladdin 3442 was never released. While under contract for Aladdin, they recorded "Is it Too Late" but again it was never released, possible because of a lack of funds, or for some other reason. It was finally released years later with this "Yesterday" record label release.

Biography :

From Washington, D.C., George Torrence first recorded for Aladdin Records in 1954 as lead with the local group billed The Five Pearls on Aladdin 3265. Four years later, fronting a gathering from New York City called The Caribbeans, he cut ”Too Soon” b/w ”Sweet Little Thing” in 1958 billed as “Georgie Torrance & The Caribbeans” for the tiny NYC label Galliant 1003.

By 1960, again shown as Georgie Torrance, he was fronting The Dippers on ”Go Away” b/w ”(You’ve Been) So Good To Me” as King 5376, and when they next turned up at Epic Records in 1961, the billing was George Torrence & The Dippers on ”Such A Fool Was I” b/w ”Way Over Yonder” as Epic 9453. That billing remained the same in 1965 although his approach, which up to now was more Doo-Wop, changed to Soul for Together ”At Last” b/w the very definite Latino-tinged boogaloo Fine Foxey Frame as Duo Disc 117 (a West Coast label which spelled the group’s name as “Dipper’s”).

Biography :

Detroit soul label founded by Ed McCoy. , Ed McCoy started the label from an office on Livernois near Fenkell in Detroit. Later he purchased the building on Warren Ave.(between Livernois and Wyoming) it was a old movie theatre but the seats had been removed, the stage was still there and he put his 2 track recording equipment up on the stage area, he had a couple dozen of these cheap $5. plastic mikes hanging every where from the ceiling. In 1963, The Manhattens featuring brothers Donald and Larry Calloway Recorded one single for Ed McCoy: "Why Should I Cry" b/w "The Feeling Is Mutual". The group would change its name to the The Grand Prix's  when New Jersey's Manhattans broke nationally and in 1964, they recorded the splendid "I See Her Pretty Face " b/w "You Drive Me Crazy" .

Biography :

In 1953 , Johnny Staton was in an air force singing group that was quite successful , winning several amateur talent contests . When Staton was discharged to Los Angeles in 1954 , he continued vocal group singing with his three brothers and a sister . Having little luck , most of the siblings abandoned the group singing . Johnny and Louis Staton stayed with it .They eventually teamed up with the rest of the performers who would eventually become the Feathers. They practiced with them until they felt ready for live performances. Ultimately they ran into Johnny Otis , who advised them to look into the Showtime music organization. They followed Otis's advice and signed a contract with Showtime. They recorded “ Johnny Darling ” for Showtime. When it began to move, Otis once again intervened, telling the Feathers that Showtime was not properly supporting or promoting their record. He suggested that perhaps they should go to the other big Los Angeles R & B label : Aladdin. Again, the group followed his suggestion. In 1954, both Aladdin and Showtime claimed the Feathers. A lawsuit followed , as both had released  their own version of “Johnny Darling". Eventually Showtime won the suit and the Feathers remained with them .

After the group's breakup, John Harris joined the Lamplighters; then he teamed with Carl White and the Ebbtides and with Carl Ell and his Buddies . Then the Sharps and eventually the Rivingtons . Jesse Belvin's session , which produced  “Dear Heart”, “Betty My Darling“ and "(This is My) Love Song ” was backed up by Johnny, Louis, Isaiah, and James Staton. Johnny Staton told Belvin, “no money, just put our name on the label". This tune was released in the 1960s and for some unknown reason the label read “Jesse Belvin and the Five Keys." On “Crashing the Party"the group was a family affair — Johnny, Louis, James, and Isaiah Staton with Ray Anderson at bass. For their last recording on Showtime, Anderson was dropped and sister Lenora was added. In late 1955, with no success or money, the existing group broke up and Johnny Staton formed a new Feathers with Roy Allen (tenor), Renee Beard (second tenor), Carl White (baritone), and Carl's brother, Cleo at bass. With out Johnny Staton  they became the Gladiators, releasing "My Baby Doll"/"Girl Of My Heart" on Johnny Otis' Dig label in March 1957 . In 1960, with second tenor Billy Mann in place of Roy Allen, they recorded as the Glens for Laitini ("Cherish My Love"/"A Little Less Talk". That record was re-released on Sudden in the following year. Without Beard, this group recorded as the Unforgettables for Pamela and their recording was done in 1957 and released in 1961.  In 1959 Johnny Staton had abandoned the name " Feathers " and formed a group called the Individuals. As incredible as it may seem , they recorded for Showtime , a label with which they had previously been involved in litigation .
