Biography :
The Deckers began in Philadelphia in 1954. In 1957, the Deckers consisted of Sam Connors, John Odoms, Larry Williams, Curtis Barnes and Ben Hart. The Deckers appeared on Ted Mack's Amateur Hour TV Show, in 1957. The Deckers' first recording came about in 1957 when the group was asked to back up a young white singer, Lynn Christie, on the NAR label. "Oh Where Did You Go" b/w "What Did I Do" (NAR 225) came out in the summer of 1957 . Shortly after the NAR recording, Curtis Barnes left The Deckers to join a spiritual group.
Through Sam Connors, the group met Jack Green. Jack formed the Yeadon label and "Sincerely With All My Heart" became its first release. Four sides were recorded, including "Sincerely With All My Heart," "Come Back Baby," "The Thing" and "Love What Have You Done". "Sincerely With All My Heart" and "Come Back Baby" were released on Yeadon 101. "Sincerely With All My Heart" was re-released a short time later with a novelty flip "The Thing".
In the early 1960's, The Deckers changed their name to the Buddies and signed with Doc Bagby (Red Top and Value labels). The first thing the Buddies did on Swan was back up Freddy Cannon on "Buzz Buzz A Diddle It" (Swan 4071). The record debuted on the Pop Charts in May 1961, reaching #51. During this time, Swan was looking for material for The Buddies to record. The first recordings the Buddies did on their own were "The Spooky Spider" backed with "Lebone Delada". After this single, Sam Connors left the group. Fred Cohen, a friend of the group who formerly sang with Larry and John’s brother’s group, The Mohawks, joining the Buddies as lead. The group now consisted of Fred Cohen, John Williams, Larry Williams and Ben Hart.
In March of 1962, The Buddies went into the studio and cut four songs. Bernard Bennick and Tony Mammarella, the owners of Swan, decided The Buddies should have a new name to go along with their new lead and style. They gave the group two different names and issued a record under each at approximately the same time. "Woman Is A Man’s Best Friend" backed with "Goodbye To Love" was released as Teddy and The Twilights. Swan issued "Atlanta" backed with "Pleasure Of Love" as The Tiffanies. The group became known as Teddy and The Twilights. In the spring of 1962, Teddy and The Twilights appeared on American Bandstand. Swan often utilized Teddy & The Twilights to vocally back their soloists. In addition, Fred Cohen often wrote or co- wrote songs for other Swan artists (Brenda Johnson, Esau Isaac, Mark Valentino & Rochelle Johnson) .
Teddy & The Twilights (1962) Top (L to R) : Larry Williams & Fred Cohen. Bottom (L to R): Ben Hart & John Odoms,
The next release under their own name was "Running Around Town" backed with "You Gotta Be Alone To Cry". Swan gave this release no promotion and it went nowhere. Teddy & The Twilights' third release under their own name was "Bimini Bimbo" backed with "I’m Just Your Clown". The record did not catch on elsewhere. The Twilights were disappointed that their records didn't go bigger than they did and blamed Swan for lack of promotion. Swan was busy promoting their big artists like Freddy Cannon and had little time for The Twilights. After 14 years of harmonizing together, the group called it quits. Their last show was at Towne Hall on May 25, 1963.

Biography :
A young man from Santa Cruz named Chuck Daniels brought in a teenage group called the Hi Tensions to the Audio Arts Studio in 1960. Daniels had met them in dj Art Laboe's studio, and Laboe suggested that they all try their fortunes with Mrs Baker. During the next four years the Hi Tensions became a kind of studio backup vocal group at Audio Arts; Mrs Baker and her young proteges tried to find the winning formula for for the talented group. The Hi Tensions were ( and are still) led by Bobby Parker, a fine r&b singer who had been with the Chanticleers on Lyric on "Daddy Must Be" "and "To keep Your Love) in 1958-59. Bobby who admired Jerry Butler, Jesse Belvin and The Coasters, met the other Hi Tensions through Roy Haggins, who became the baritone for the group, in 1960. The rest of the group included David Cook (Tenor), Jack Johnson (Bass) and Jonathan "Sonny" Allen (Baritone/Tenor)

 .
Leon Peels
The boys were from South-Central L.A. area around Jefferson High School that also Spawned Belvin, Richard Berry and Arthur Lee Maye. Their first effort for the new Audio label was "The Clock"/ "So Far Away" (Audio 201), recorded on October 20, 1960. Out of the same session came "I'm Saying Goodbye" and "A Real Sensation," buy, for some unknown reason, the Hi Tensions were called the Angels on this release (Audio 203). Roy Haggins sang the lead on "A Real Sensation," while Bobby Parker handles "I'm Saying Goodbye". This 45 came out shortly after "The Clock" and it's probable that name change was made for just this one record to gain additional airplay.
Jackson & Madelon Baker (Audio Arts recording Studio's Owner)
Mrs Baker continued to work with the Hi Tensions and "Wedding Song","Old Times", "Traveling Lady" and "Come What May" - all unreleased - were recorded at Audio Arts in the spring of 1961, all unreleased, but "Got A Good Feeling" backed with "Ebbing On The Tide" were tried for a later release on Milestone, but this nice ballad didn't get far. The Hi Tensions then backed up Leon Peels, the former lead of the Blue Jays, and finally recorded "She'll Break Your Heart" B/W "Mary Had A Little Lamb" for the new Whirlybird label. Although they stopped actively recording in the mid-sixties, the Hi Tensions remained close friends.

In 1956, Bronx native Gil Valentin formed a group he called The Radiants and recorded "Ra Cha Cha" b/w "I´ll Never Be Mean" released by Wizz Record in 1958. The next year, under the name The Casanovas, they recorded the sides "In My Land Of Dreams" b/w "Deep In The Heart Of The Jungle" released by Planet Records in 1961. So as not to be confused with The Casanovas from North Carolina (recordings on Apollo 1954-57), The group had a record in 1959 called " A Kiss From Your Lips" (a Flamingos remake) on Brunswick records under the name The Originals, then re-released in 1960 under the name The Valentinos.

Biography :
Hailing from the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia Pa., The Ly-Dells emerged in 1959, during the tail end of the doo-wop era. like many of their contempories from philly, Dovells, Danny & the Juniors, Billy & the Essentials, the Ly-Dells brought a different approach harking back to the harmony structures of the mid 1950’s. The group’s members, Chuck (Casino) Hatfield, Gary (Skin) Young, Paul (Two Ply) O’lone, Bob Oslar (…and various singers featured on their recordings : Billy Daniels, Jackie Butler, Frank Malett , Rich Wetzel) Came from the 46th and Samson, and 64th and Vine St. Section of West Philadelphia. Around 1961, the act caught the eye of music impresario Inez Ryan of Ridley Park. Ryan would soon manage and handle direction of the group. The Ly-Dells intial waxing of “Wizard Of Love” and “Let This Night Last” came in the summer of 61’. Released on Master records (Master 101). Both sides were recorded at Philly’s sound plus studios, which were owned by Don & Tony Luis, who in return, received production credits on the 45 label. The record was distributed nationally by Morris Levy’s Roulette records.
“Wizard Of Love”, was an immediate hit locally, with the help of airplay on WIBG and WFIL. Cash Box magazine listed the record on august 5th as their 14 pick out of 50, that could soon enter their top 100, and later that month it was a huge success in New York, reaching 8 two weeks in a row on WABC’S music survey. By september 25th, it peaked nationally at 54 on Billboard’s hot 100. Toward the end of 1961, the writing team of Hatfield & O’lone came up with a song much in the formula of “Wizard”, entitled “Genie Of The Lamp” backed with the great up-tempo “Teenage Tears”. Once again, the 45 was released on the Master label (Master 111 ) with distribution by SCA and Swan records.
During 1962, The Ly-Dells would begin a strong relationship with legendary producer Frank Slay. Known for his extraordinary work in the 50’s/60’s’s with Cameo records, Swan records, and association with Bob Crewe, Slay would lend his production talents and regular studio players to the group’s next side ,“Book Of Songs" b/w “Hear That Train”. Recorded at Bell Sound in NYC. & released on Slay’s SCA Label. It was Frank Slay, who at a recording session of Freddy Cannon recruited “the Ly-Dells” to provide the yells during the roller coaster sequence of "Broadway".
Freddy Cannon
The Ly-Dells provided vocal backing for two of Jim Drucker’s compositions on a session held oct.16 1962 at sound plus studios. the songs were “The Day Rock & Roll Dies” and “Now That You’ve Gone”. a later session was conducted march 14, 1963, at Philly’s Reco-Art (later known as Sigma Sound), these sides were cut again, plus two of “the Ly-Dells” songs “Karen" and "Doin The Wiggle Wobble ” (written by Hatfield , O’lone & Drucker) the latter sides were released after resolving some legal issues, by roulette records (roulette 4493) in may 1963.
Jim Drucker worked as a teenager for Jolly Joyce Theatrical Booking Agency (JJA), Philadelphia and ran weekend WIBG Record Hops with Harold B. Childs, for Buzzy Curtis (Promotions) and was in high school at Philly's Edison HS with members of the Boss-Tones. In 1964 he combined Chuck Hatfield, Paul O' Lone from The Lydells and Babbo and Willie Weaver from the Boss-Tones, and in the dark of night (at Chancellor Records Studios, 9th and Vine Streets), He produced: "Stormy Weather" b/w "Working at the Factory" . Jerry Blavat, Russ Faith (Chancellor Records) and Buzz Curtis sold the master (RCA Tape Recorder deck) tapes to Atlantic Records. The record was released in the spring of 1964, under the name of “the Four Casts” (Atlantic 2228)
1964 - Ly-Dells/Len-Dells - (Top) Gary Young (Bottom) Chuck Hatfield, Billy Shield & Jackie Butler
Later in 64’, The Ly-Dells would record under the name of “The Len- Dells” with a single on the Reach label entitled “Don't Be A Litter Bug" backed with "Maryann”. The act also recorded the song “The Monkey’s Dead”, written by Drucker, Hatfield, O’Lone and was cut at a sound plus session, but unreleased in 64’.The year 1965, amidst the height of Beatlemania, and demise of the golden age of doo wop, The group would emerge for what would be their final 45 release. The a side “Three Little Monkeys”, was written by Inez Ryan & Tony Luis, and backed with “Playing Hide & Seek” composed by Bob Boulanger under the production of Frank Slay and placed on his Southern Sound label.

Biography :
The Blue Jays perfectly represent the transitional era between '50s R&B and the '60s soul era by singing doo wop-styled songs with a gospelly lead vocal. They are best known for their 1961 Top 40 hit "Lovers Island," which many consider to be the last hit record in true doo wop style. The Los Angeles-based vocal quartet — Leon Peels (b. 1936, Newport, AR), Van Richardson, Alex Manigo, and Leonard Davidson (aka "Len" and "Tree Tall Len") — came together in the suburb of Venice, CA, in 1961.
Following an appearance at an amateur show at the Fox Theater in Venice, the group were put in touch with country singer Werly Fairburn, who signed them to his Milestone label. Milestone's roster consisted mostly of rockabilly bands and had already achieved some success with the Paradons ("Diamonds and Pearls"). The Blue Jays' first single "Lovers Island," written by Peels and Manigeault, seemed almost like a throwback to an earlier time in vocal group music.
Though it was not a big seller like other vocal act singles of the time by groups like the Jive Five or the Dreamlovers — it charted in the pop Top 40 at number 31 and performed well on the local L.A. R&B charts — it served as a beautiful swan song for the doo wop era. The group followed their hit with singles like "Tears Are Falling" (1961) and "The Right to Love" (1962), but nothing came of them and the group change their name to 'the Values' and recorded "Return To Me" b/w "That's The Way" on the Invicta label.
