At this dances, four guys discovered they enjoyed singing together very much and decided to form a group called the Emotions. Members consisted of Tommy Tucker (Lead), Larry Angeli (Baritone), Joe Basta (First Tenor) and Richie Merrit (Second Tenor). The Group's first songs was "Mambo City" recorded on a demo. The group eventually gained a local following and began appearing at record hops, social clubs… At this time Richie had left the group and was replaced by Eddie Povenelli.

The group met a man named Marv Kalfin, who eventually became their manager. He introduced the group to two songs he had written…"Mr Night" and "Make A Love". While the master recordings were being cut, a female member was added to the group. Marv brought the master tape to Laurie and their reaction was quite favorable. Another group who had already gained much popularity in the area, was using the same name. At the last time before going to press, Laurie did the first thing that came to mind. The "E" was dropped and the Guys were named The Motions. The single was released in June 1961. At about the time the Motions' record was released, another Laurie single was "Breaking Big"… The Jarmels' "A lItlle bit of Soap". "Mr Night" never really had a chance, the group rapidly became disguise ted and eventually disbanded.

The Story of the Motions, does not end here. Let us go back to the year 1957 and the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New york. At this time, Three teenagers in the same junior high school, Joe DiBartolo (First Tenor and Lead), Bernie Drosdcz (Baritone and Bass) and Harold Marcus (Second Tenor) and two others Johnny Jerrywicki (Baritone) and Georgie Moe (Lead)  joined together to Form a Group called the Del-Fons. Although this group only sang at parties, they recorded a demo 1959 that featured the songs "I Only Want You" and "This is My Love". Soon after this same two songs, released back to back, became a two sided hit for the Passions early in 1960. During 1962, the Del-Fons changed their name to the Splendors. However, due to repeated problems involving members , the group finally broke up, this was the same time that the Motions Disbanded.

Early in 1963, Joe DiBartolo met Tonny Tucker and decided to reform the Splendors, consisting of Himself, Tommy Tucker and those two original members Bernie Drosdcz and Harold Marcus. Later that year Joe's cousin, Vinny Catalano, at this time in charge of Wilshire Records, had written two songs for the Splendors, "Lonely, Lonely Nights" and "Record Hop". The group recorded both songs but the reared wasn't released. In 1964, George Moe rejoined the group. They now began appearing at various places throughout New York. The Boys would occasionally buy time at a local recording studio in order to capture some of their harmony on tape. Of course, Demo discs were made of these sessions...

Biography :

It all started back in 1955 when a large group of eighth graders from the Mount Troy / Troy Hill District of Pittsburgh were attending Saint Anthony's Church. The Group of 12-20 boys would pass the chapel along side St. Anthony's every week on their way to church. One day someone suggested they start a singing group and all agreed. Whithin three weeks when the smoke cleared only four remained with a serious commitment to singing Tony Rausch, Paul Young, Ross Melodia and Fred Ferketic who were now the "Chapel Boys".

The group would perform at local hops and by 1957 Paul was replaced by Bob Bubarth. The group made some demos of original tunes they had written, "A Tear", Scarlet Scarf", "Swing Loose" and "Walla Walla Bong Bong". They would acquire amanager in 1958, Bob Ross, who was working with several other groups at the time (i.e. - Mario & the Satellites). A name change also developed and the group became "The Chapelaires".

Soon a management change would have the boys under the direction of DJ Mark Flanagan (Bob Pappas) of Weep. He got the group a contract with HAC Records named after the three song writing partners, Hal-Al-Chuck. Fred was a few years older than the rest of the group and in 1959 elected to go to college. He was replaced with bill Schmidt. So the recordings on HAC in 1961 were Bill, Tony, Ross and Bob. Bill would soon be drafted (1962?) and the group picked up John Lajzo and Wayne Goldie, Both former members of a local acappella group the Suburbans.

  The Chapelaires aka The Softwinds

The groups sound had now changed so they felt a new name should match their sound, "The Softwinds". Hac Records only had four releases on the label before they closed their doors after less than two years of operation.

The Chapelaires aka The Softwinds

The Softwinds

The final release by "The Softwinds" were by the boys themselves. After a lack of succes the group would loose Wayne and go back to the name the "Chapelaires". Elmer Willett heard them and had them do some background vocals for Gateway Records, the label he was affiliated with.

The Casanovas, Gleams /Four Gleams, Originals, Valentinos, Silky & The Shantungs and also The Radiants were basically the same people with few changes. In 1956, Bronx native Gil Valentin formed a group he called The Radiants and recorded "Ra Cha Cha" b/w "I´ll Never Be Mean" released by Wizz Record in 1958. The next year, under the name The Casanovas, they recorded the sides "In My Land Of Dreams" b/w "Deep In The Heart Of The Jungle" released by Planet Records in 1961.  So as not to be confused with The Casanovas from North Carolina (recordings on Apollo 1954-57), The group had a record in 1959 called " A Kiss From Your Lips" (a Flamingos remake) on Brunswick records under the name The Originals, then re-released in 1960 under the name The Valentinos.

All this practice and rehearsal inspired their manager David King to ferry his charges downtown to Bernie Lowe and Kal Mann's merging shrine, Cameo records, then perched at 360 South Broad Street. The Poohabahs were duly impressed, thus aranging sessions at Reco-Arts  in mis 1958 where the sextet etched three sides, two of which were, well, lackluster, to put it kindly, "Juke Box" a sublimely silly sketch, matched with "(Lessons Of The Cha Cha Cha) "were tepid tunes hardly worthy of the intricate harmonies which were by now inbred in each and very Coed. "Big Chief " was their particular favorite. Thereafter, the Coeds began 1958 on Safari and on Cameo promoting the dickens out of their first release "Big Chief" b/w "Juke Box!" in the early spring.

Despite the fact they had no new recording, The Coeds, now tabbed as John Hayes and the passions, dropped in at bistrosfrom time to time during relatively period, recording wise, of 1959-62.

Lamont McLemore began harmonizing under the streetlamps of St. Louis with a bunch of guys. He sang the bass, and a guy they called Johnny Gold sang lead. They called him Johnny Gold, but his real name was John Golden. One night they were outside a club where Redd Foxx was performing. Because it was so hot inside, the doors were left open, and Foxx stepped outside for a moment after his set. Lamont McLemore asked if he could please let us do one number on stage. He was understandably hesitant at first, but when he overheard them practicing he gave them a shot.

The Intervals (2)aka The Vocals aka The Indexes
(L to R) The Vocals - L. McLemore, M. McCoo, Fr.  Baskett, Rex Middleton (Arranger), Ray Charles, H. Elston & L. Summers.

They were eager to find a studio to record them. While in the Los Angeles area on a Sunday when everything is usually closed up, they found a studio where a guy was sweeping up. They offered to do his sweeping if he would let them have a few minutes to record a couple of songs they had written. After much begging and pleading, he called the owners of the studio and they were told to come back in a couple of days.” The result was a release as by John Golden and the Indexes on the Douglas label (#101). The record got a lot of airplay for the first couple of days after it was released, but then disappeared.  Lamont McLemore formed the Intervals, The group had a brief recording stint with Leon Rene in late 1961. the result was the two sided "Here's That Rainy Day" / "Wish I Could Change My Mind" (Class 304) plus two a cappella tracks, "You Are My only Love" and "Funny How Time Goes By" Which were unissed. The Group consisted of Lamont McLemore, Richard Trulove, Paul Grady, Ron Townson & Fritz Baskett.

Then Lamont joined the Hi-Fis. A short time later, McLemore began assembling another group, which consisted of Hi-Fis Marilyn McCoo, Florence LaRue, Harry Elston and Lawrence Summers. The Hi-Fis became the Vocals and In 1963, they sang at local clubs while taking lessons from a vocal coach. In 1964, they came to the attention of Ray Charles, who took them on tour with him the following year. Eventually, the group changed their name to the Vocals and recorded for Charles’ Tangerine label. When none of their singles charted, the group went their separate ways. Lamont McLemore, Ron Townson and Marilyn McCoo went on to a career with the Fifth Dimension.

Dennis Harrington

Bob Zelenka

Discography :

1961 - I really must know / Maybe tomorrow (Crossroads 401)
1962 - Rocket to the moon / Because of you (Crossroads 402)

Biography :

The Reflections all came from the same Rosedale, Queens neighborhood. As in many neighborhoods at the time, singing groups were formed, dissolved and reformed with singers moving about to find the right combination of sound and dedication. Alfred, Jerry, Joey, Dennis and Bob had all been members of other groups and they came together to form the The Reflections.

Echo, electricity, heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer - Rosedale Station was the perfect place to sing. This was the place The Reflections practiced on a regular basis. Practice paid off - with releases on Crossroads Records. They released two 45rpms - 'Maybe Tomorrow' b/w 'I Really Must Know' and 'Because of You' b/w 'Rocket to the Moon' The records received some air play and the group made personal appearances, catching the attention of a New York disc jockey who wanted to promote the group Reflections. Management and the disc jockey could not come to terms and so the group became disenchanted and broke up a short time later.

Three of the four girls had previously sung in a Fremont High School group named the Sweethearts, who recorded for producer H.B. Barnum in 1961 and moonlighted on obscure one-off 45s as the Utmosts and the Sa-Shays.  Although amateur, they were already establishing career paths as versatile session vocalists and barely knew their identity from one release to the next - immediately prior to signing for Dore, they had recorded a one-off 45 for producer Steve Venet (himself a former Dore artist) as the Dynels on Dot.

Something about 'He Played 1, 2, 3, 4' piqued Lew Bedell interest because a few months later, he re-issued it with a new B-side ('My Pillow') on Dore 677 crediting the Darlings. Then again, in October 1963 on Dee Dee 677 as by the Delicates!. And he wasn't finished yet. Possibly frustrated by his inability to break the record, Bedell sold the master to a couple who ran a tiny R&B label, Celeste, out of their LA home, prompting a further re-issue with the revised title 'This Old Man' on Celeste 676. Oma Heard later sang with Ike Turner's Ikettes, did session work and recorded under her own name for Motown in the late 1960s, while the Water sisters worked as background singers on countless sessions by such diverse artists as Paul Simon, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Paul and Rod Stewart.
