Biography :

The Sensations had two separate careers : one on Atco in the fifties and one in the sixties, with a different line-up and style, on Argo and Junior. The group was founded in 1954, in Philadelphia, as the Cavaliers. They were one of the few R&B vocal groups with a female lead, Yvonne Mills.

The other members were the group's founder, Tommy Wicks (tenor), who also sang lead occasionally, Alphonso Howell (1937-1998, bass) and an unidentified fourth member. In July 1955 they were signed by the fledgling Atco label (a subsidiary of Atlantic), where they were renamed the Sensations.

Their first record was released in November 1955 : "Yes Sir, That's My Baby" (Atco 6056), an old Gene Austin standard from 1925. It was an immediate success, peaking at # 15 on the R&B charts in February 1956, and secured the group some worthwhile bookings.

This was followed by another evergreen that was given a major musical overhaul, "Ain't He Sweet" (Atco 6067). However, it was the other side, "Please Mr. Disc Jockey", that charted, reaching a peak position of # 13 in May 1956. Atco released four more singles between July 1956 and April 1958, but there were no further chart entries. After the three-year Atco contract expired, the group decided to disband as Yvonne became Mrs. Yvonne Baker and started raising a family.

In 1961, Alphonso Howell, feeling that vocal groups were once again in demand, convinced Yvonne to re-form the Sensations. Tenor Richard Curtain (ex-Hideaways, MGM) and baritone Sam Armstrong (who had been in the Rays for a brief period) were added, and the group persuaded their old manager, Philadelphia deejay Kae Williams (who had managed the Silhouettes in the meantime) to handle them again.

He arranged a record deal with Chess's Argo affiliate, which released another old standard, "Music, Music, Music" (a # 1 for Teresa Brewer in 1950), complete with walking bass and rocking sax solo. Not only did it go to # 7 on the R&B charts, it also gave the group their first pop hit, reaching # 54 in Billboard. "Put Another Nickel In" was changed to "Put Another Dime In". "Oh well you know, depreciation, man", as Ray Charles would say.

The second Argo single came out in November 1961 and was written by Yvonne Baker. It is the record for which the Sensations are best remembered, "Let Me In". Helped by the catchy "wee-oop-oop-we-ou" harmony, the disc went all the way to # 4 on the pop charts (# 2 R&B). As so often happens after a major hit, the Sensations couldn't record any follow-up hits to sustain their momentum.

"That's My Desire" (now credited to "Yvonne Baker and the Sensations") made it to # 69 in May 1962, after which there were two additional Argo releases, along with several on Kae Williams's own Junior label. But nothing could bring the group back in the spotlight. Yvonne Baker later attempted an unsuccessful solo career.

1958 - Jump Crybaby (Demo)

Biography :

One day in 1957, five street-corner doo-woppers decided to get in on the action as the Mon-Vales. Without any agent , they cut a demo tape at Sadowski's Market in Fairhope, which had a top notch, cottage industry recording studio in its basement. The instrumental tracks were laid down by another local band, Donora's Highlighters. Next came the hard part, peddling the songs to a record company. They began to door-knock on Record Row, demo in hand. Pen Joy Records on 45th Street liked the tape - it consisted of "Why Should I Cry?," "Jump Crybaby," "Carol-Ann," and "Cool Kat And His White Bucks."

"Carol-Ann" b/w "White Bucks" (Pen Joy #501, released 1958) was spinning on Porky's turntable, and the Mon-Vales had a local two-sided hit. They  playing clubs there and in the Boston area, all the time honing a frenetic stage act. They even got to play one of Alan Freed's Rock and Roll shows. The Mon-Vales came home to a busy schedule of hops, high school dances, and the local club circuit. Their high-energy act was center stage at the Stockdale Fire Hall, the White Elephant, the Monessen Italian Club, and the Greensburg Fire Hall, plus whatever Mon Valley gyms or social halls would have them.

Biography:

The group formed in 1947 as the Caverliers and shortly thereafter became the Jets. For two years they appeared locally, and in 1953 they turned professional. Charles Booker helped them arrange material and they used his house to practice. He later became a semipermanent sixth member. In 1952 Earthaline Lee managed the group, still known as the Jets. She arranged for their first recording session with Eddie Heller's Rainbow Records in New York.

Walter Taylor was scheduled to sing lead on "Drag It Home Baby" at that first session but became hoarse that day and Charles Booker filled in. In 1953, Amos Milburn saw the Jets perform and set up a recording session with his label, Aladdin, in New York. Because Mesner of Aladdin was aware of another group called the Jets, they were renamed the Bachelors and recorded as the Bachelors for Aladdin.

The Aladdin recording didn't do well and the Bachelors then auditioned for Atlantic, Apollo, and Teddy Reig and Jack Hook's Royal Roost label in early 1956. Royal Roost accepted them and the Bachelors recorded four sides for Royal Roost, two of which were released on that label.

Lead "Buck" Mason was drafted into the army and Robert Russell took his place. Walter Taylor left after the Royal Roost session and Charles Booker replaced him . Taylor had left briefly before and was replaced by Don Covay for a short period. Herb Fisher also left and was replaced by James Taylor.

Billy Mitchell

In 1957, Clovers' manager Lou Krefetz started the Poplar label and invited the group to record for him. The group now consisted of Robert Russell, James Taylor, James Walton, and John Bowie. They recorded one disc at Poplar and broke up in 1958. James "Toy" Walton decided to try it again, getting Herb Fisher back, along with Wilbert Hess Dobson (baritone), Joe Woodley (baritone) and Johnny Terry (bass). Calling themselves the Links, they recorded "She's The One" for the Teenage label in 1958.James "Toy" Walton also recorded with the L' Cap-Tans on Anna and the Clovers. He also sang with the Knickerbockers, who were together for several years but never recorded.

Biography :

Don Dell & the Up-starts are a Brooklyn NY group who cut two singles on the small label East Coast : "May It Be My Fortune / Time" and  "Someone For Me, (Is There) / A Special Love" with a nice picture Sleeve. They recorded their songs at Flatbush Studios. Two other songs "Honey Doll" and "Baby I Don't Care"  was released in Sweden (Jan 45-020). The English got a hold of some of the group's master tapes when they cut the rare records on East Coast.

Don Dell & The Up Starts (2)
Don Del Seni (Don Dell)

They recorded this two songs at the same session, and the tapes managed to make their way to Sweden, where they were finally released, 20 years after they were originally recorded, in 1980. To cap it off, the Swedish company mis-identified the backing band as the Montereys, although Don, a retired school principal, says they were in fact the Up-starts. In 1962, Don Dell recorded another single with the Montereys on his own label (Roman records).

Biography :

The Eternals formed during the late '50s, in the Freeman Street neighborhood of the Bronx, where the quintet , Charlie Gerona, Fred Hodge, Ernie Sierra, Arnie Torres , and Alex Miranda started out singing in junior high school as the Gleamers, cutting their teeth on covers by the Flamingoes and the Spaniels; Gerona, meanwhile, was crafting songs in the humorous pop tradition of the Coasters, the Cadets, and the Olympics.

The Eternals

Soon the Gleamers were calling themselves the Orbits, and developing a sound all their own. A novelty Gerona penned for the holidays, "Christmas in the Jungle," which came complete with jungle sounds and bird calls (mostly done by Torres) received airplay from the Murray the K and WABC's disc jockey Bruce Morrow's shows and soon became their calling card.

The Eternals

Their new manager, Bill Martin, a friend of Morrow's, then turned them on to Melba Records chief Morty Craft, who put the group in Beltone Studios in late spring of 1959 to record the song, which by now had been changed to "Rockin' in the Jungle." The group also felt that a new name was in order and crowned themselves the Eternals, no doubt hoping for everlasting success. "Rockin' in the Jungle" was released in early summer on Craft's new Hollywood Records label, becoming an immediate hit in New York (number 11 locally).

On July 13th, the song hit Billboard's national Pop Charts, where it lodged at number 78. The Eternals' second novelty release -- "Babalu's Wedding Day" -- was just starting to break, when the Etemals' manager felt compelled to sue shady booking agents who were apparently attempting a less-than-ethical move on the group. As a result of the court case, "Babalu's" distribution was stopped and the Eternals were denied their shot at stardom. (The single became a jingle on WABC disc jockey Bob Lewis' radio show and helped kept the group's image alive for years to come).

In January 1961, the Eternals' last single was issued through Morty Craft's Warwick Records. The A-side was written by new member George Villanueva, who also sang lead, and should have been a hit but more legal entanglements kept the record from charting. The group disbanded in 1962, but by 1972 they re-emerged for a show at the Academy of Music  ~ Bryan Thomas, All Music Guide

Biography :

The Castells (no relation to the Philadelphia CASTELLES) were a white pop trio formed in Santa Rosa, California, during the late fall of 1958 . The threesome members were Chuck Girard, Tom Hicks, and Joe Kelly. In early 1959 Bob Ussery joined and the group played the usual local gigs until they met mentor and disc jockey Dan Dillon, who whisked a demo of theirs to Era Records' Herb Newman in Los Angeles.

Ed Sullivan Show

Their first single for this HILLTOPPERS/CREWCUTS- styled quartet was"Romeo," which prompted Billboard's reviewer of January 30, 1961, to comment, " Pleasant teen appeal ditty is wrapped up in melodic vocal by lead singer and group." Local airplay lifted the cut only to number 101 on Billboard's Bubbling Under in February 1961, so the Castells tried again with "Sacred" in April, a beautiful full- harmonied tune with Chuck Girard's soft-as-butter lead vocal and a sticks-on-bamboo rhythm right out of Ernie Kovacs's Nairobi Trio.

                                                                      With Roy Orbison

The cha- cha rhythmed pop pleaser shot to number 20 nationally by the summer of 1961. A hit is no guarantee of the next single's success, however, and the Castells' next 45, "Make Believe Wedding," reached only number 98; it had a nice semi-ballad arrangement and satisfying vocals, but the song was weak. The group did not write and were dependent on the label for material.  After one more failure, "Vision of You," they came upon a dreamy Steve Howard rhythm ballad right out of the 1955 FOUR COINS- FOUR LADS bag called "So This Is Love." It charted on April 14, 1962, finishing one notch shy (#21) of "Sacred" on the national hit list.

Their last charter was a remake of the Frank Sinatra number one hit from 1946, "Oh What It Seemed to Be," which floated to number 91 in August and sank soon after. Their next single, "Echoes in the Night," had a chime intro and a musical feel that was possibly borrowed three months later for THE EMOTIONS' hit "Echo." The Castells' B side was a castanets -filled, Spanish- guitar-laden, up-tempo 45 called "Only One," which was arranged by Jack Nitzsche about the same time he became Phil Spector's arranger for "Zippity-Doo-Dah."

With Jan & Dean

This new Castells direction didn't impress radio, so in June 1963 Era retreated, reissuing their first single's B side "Little Sad Eyes." A reviewer in Billboard wrote, "The smooth-sounding group with the harmony touch has another neat ballad effort here. It's a fender side and it gets a meaningful performance. Watch it".

Castells live (Van Krugel,Girard,Kelly,Hicks)

The Castells did but it went nowhere. By early 1964 the quartet was on Warner Bros. Records with an exciting Brian Wilson arranged, written, and produced single titled "I Do." Its melody was note-for-note the same as THE BEACH BOYS' 1962 "County Fair," but with a "Spectorized" production, Brian created something like a male RONETTES record out of "I Do." With the cut playing in both the East and West, Warner Bros, must have truly dropped the ball to let this one get away.

When their solid rendering of THE DUBS' 1957 classic "Could This Be Magic" failed in 1964 to get label support the Castells were doomed to travel the desert of record deals, coming upon the occasional oases of Decca, Laurie, and United Artists but with no further success. They disbanded around 1964. Member Chuck Girard later joined the surf rock group The Hondells, and in the 1970s became a popular and pioneering CCM artist

The Next year, the same group cut " At Last" b/w "September Song" for Jaro International under the name of The Chordells.  Jaro was a jazz subsidiary label of Top Rank Records established in 1959 in New York City.

The Chordells (2) aka The Stereophonics

At the same time, another group of the same name with a male lead (Little Chip aka Willie Howard) with female backing cut two singles for Hull & Mascot records. Mascot was a subsidiary of Hull. it is quite possible that this is the same group with a few personnel changes and all the Labels : Apt, Jaro, Hull and Mascot are from Manhattan...
