Biography :

The story of the Double Dates begins with Benedict Franklyn Savage who, by his senior year in high school, played the guitar, was a member of an instrumental sextet group. In 1958, When one of the members left the group, Thomas Doherty, a junior at Hicksville High School was added. The Gents were born. Early in January 1959 wiyh some demos, they made the rounds on Broadway trying to push their stuff. At 1650 Broadway they were on the 6th floor when they walked into the office of Leo Rogers who managed the Royal Teens of “Short Shorts'" fame."  They were met by Vinny Catalano who told them  that he would listen to their stuff but told them that instrumentals were fading from the rock and roll scene.

Vinny Catalano and partner's Kenny Kuluga, had some songs that they had written which they could not record. He brought out a demo recording of 'Tatoo' that they had done with the sheet music and words and played it for them. He also had a demo of 'I Love You, Girl' and asked them if they thought they could do anything with them. He gave them the demos and asked them to get back to him. The Gents  returned to Long Island. Only Tom & Benedict were interested by the project. The Gents were finished. Ben asked his friend Susan Virginia O'Rourk if she would want to sing and if she knew another girl that might want to be part of their group and Sue Crave's "Susan Elizabeth Crave) name came up and she was also interested in singing. Tom Doherty rounded out the group and the Double Dates were born.

The double Dates the trip to 1650 Broadway and up to Leo Rogers’ office to see Vinny Catalano. They like the Demos and in July 1959, they recorded the two songs with Bob Gaudio and the Royal Teens, who would be the backup group for the session. "I Love You, Girl" b/w "Tatoo" were released by Luck records.  The Double Dates made one appearance in a Jersey City, New Jersey theater but none of the members could remember its name. Ben and Tom appeared on the Clay Cole television show (which premiered September of 1959 and was first called "Rate The Records") where they lip synced "I Love You, Girl" and "Tatoo." According to Tom, Dion and the Belmonts also appeared on the bill.

The Sophomores (1)

Biography :

This group started in 1954 in the Roxbury section of Boston, initially calling them selves The Five Stars of Love. They practiced endlessly and appeared at many local nightspots. At one of these nightspots, the Show Bar, Al Chambers walked off the stage during an appearance swearing that he would leave show business. He was replaced by Roland Clements, Donald's brother, who formerly had been with the Dappers on Peacock.

In 1955, the group named itself the Sophomores and soon caught the interest of Jack Darwin of Dawn Records. Darwin set up a recording date in New York City. Following the recording, they continued with their appearances at local clubs. They recorded more singles and cut an album.

Late in 1957, they left the Dawn/Seeco organization. Roland Clements went into the service and was replaced by Johnny Mack. The new foursome recorded one song for Chord Records in New York. They recorded nothing else after Chord. They continued to appear locally at clubs and nightspots, despite the discouragement brought about by their unsuccessful attempt for a hit record. They stayed together until the late 1960s and then disbanded.

Joe Tex & His X Class Mates (Jackson, Mississippi)

Personnel :

Joe Tex (All the Voices)

Discography :

1959 - Charlie Brown Got Expelled / Blessed Are These Tears (Ace 559)

Biography :

Tex recorded for King Records between 1955 and 1957 with little success.  In 1958, he signed with Ace and continued to have relative failures, but he was starting to build a unique stage reputation, opening for artists such as Jackie Wilson, James Brown, and Little Richard.  Said change involved another chameleon-like shedding of a musical skin. Instead of aping Little Richard. Joe would start off 1959 by pretending to be the Coasters. The quartet had just come off two consecutive R&B smashes, songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's most vivid rock'n'roll playlets, 'Yakety Yak' and 'Charlie Brown'.

Joe's idea was to bring the world a further chapter of bad boy Brown's scholastic life and to marry it to a close relative of 'Yakety Yak's melody. He even double-tracked himself in an effort to sound more like a group, and Ace released "Charlie Brown Got Expelled" (Ace 559) as by "Joe Tex & his X-Class Mates" to ram the message home. But the message fell on deaf ears in the spring of 1959. In 1960, he left Ace and recorded for Detroit's Anna Records label...
