Biography :

The three girls that made up The Teen Trio -- Sandy Schneider and twin sisters, Jean and June Hendon -- actually began singing together in their preteen years in their home state of Michigan when they were known as The Three Chicks. After they joined the Pennsylvanians, Fred Waring renamed them The Teen Trio. During the time the girls were with the Pennsylvanians in the early 1950s, they recorded with the group, toured with the group, and appeared on their weekly CBS-TV show.

 They had a wonderfully unique and inimitable sound that was achieved through their incredibly great vocal harmony. For us Christmas music lovers, of course, they added great warmth, spice and charm to the legendary Fred Waring LP 'Twas The Night Before Christmas, via their solo efforts on the songs Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, and the album's title song, 'Twas The Night Before Christmas.

Mr. Waring once remarked that the Teen Trio was the greatest trio that ever sang for the Pennsylvanians. And coming from the man who was known as "The Man Who Taught America How To Sing," that's quite a compliment indeed. After their tenure with the Pennsylvanians, the girls became known as The Jaye Sisters (a name picked for them by the great Tommy Dorsey). They initially recorded for Decca Records, and then later, Atlantic Records. Among the standout recordings they had during their Atlantic years were two songs that their good friend Bobby Darin wrote for them: Real Love and School's Out.

Jean, June and Sandy are all retired today and enjoying sunny climates far from their home state of Michigan: Jean and June now live in Florida, and Sandy in California. They have remained very close friends through the years and still get together occasionally, and when they do, they still sing together for old times' sake.

Biography :

It is now four decades since Vernon Nesbeth formed The Southlanders, the longest lasting vocal group in British pop music history. Originally from Jamaica, Vernon came to Britain as a teenager in 1950 after winning an "Opportunity Knocks" contest in his native country. His first public performance in Britain was in a singing contest at the Paramount Club in the West End, which at time was the only Dance Hall in London which allowed unaccompanied black men in.

Buoyed by his success at home, and backed by the Harry Webb band, Vernon gave it his all - and finished second to last! This shock sent him looking for a music teacher and he was given the address of the renowned black actor, singer and teacher, Edric Connor. On meeting, Vernon told the man destined to become his mentor that he wanted to learn music, to which Connor replied "I can't teach music, but I can teach you how to sing".

This he set out to do, and Vernon attended lessons once a week for the next two years. Edric Connor never charged him, saying, "My payment will be the success I make you". By late 1953 Edric Connor was planning to record an LP of songs from the Caribbean and asked Vernon to form a quartet of backing singers.

He recruited Frank Mannah, brothers Alan and Harry Wilmot (Harry was the father of popular contemporary British entertainer Gary Wilmot) from the Ken Hunter Quartet, and they made their live debut singing two songs from the LP at a celebrity nightclub in London. Now known as "The Caribbeans", shortly afterwards, whilst rehearsing in Weeks Studio, Hanover Street, two men walked in after hearing the singing from the street and offered to manage them.

They were Sid Green and Les Farrell who suggested a change of name; so "The Southlanders"  were born, signed to the Grade Organization and began touring the UK variety circuit plus dates in Europe where they established a reputation in Germany, Italy, France and Belgium. In 1955 the Southlanders signed to Parlophone and released their first single, "Earth Angel" which was produced by George Martin, several years before he came to prominence with Peter Sellers' comedy albums and the Beatles' recordings.

Four more singles were released on Parlophone but it wasn't until they switched to Decca in 1957 that the Southlanders got their one, and only, top-ten hit "Alone", which is said to have sold 750,000 copies in the first few weeks of release. But it is their sixth and last Decca release that the Southlanders are most identified with, the novelty "Mole In A Hole", which they are required to do at every performance. The Southlanders then moved onto Top Rank and in 1961 released their last single "Imitation of Love".

Throughout the late 50s and early 60s the Southlanders appeared regularly on the top rated television programmes of the day becoming familiar faces on such shows as 6.5 Special and Crackerjack. Live performances, however, have always been, and still are, the most important aspect of the Southlanders and they were among the first to join Jimmy Saville's Mecca dance hall shows.

Since then they have continuously appeared in concerts, cabarets and cruise ships throughout the world often supporting the top comedians of the day such as Jim Davidson, Michael Barrymore, Mike Read, Bobby Davro & Jimmy Cricket captivating these audiences with their stylish, highly entertaining act.

Biography :

Three of the Meadowlarks (Don Julian, Ronald Barrett, and Earl Jones) somehow got to do some recording for Specialty Records, where (on October 18, 1954) they backed up Percy Mayfield on three tunes: "My Heart Is Cryin'," "You Were Lyin' To Me," and "Baby You're Rich." On the records, the group was credited as the "Maytones."  The first two of these were released in November 1954 and reviewed (both "good" on December 18). Other reviews that week went to the Charms' "Ling, Ting, Tong," the Counts' "Let Me Go, Lover," the Rivileers' "For Sentimental Reasons," the Chordcats' "A Girl To Love," the 5 Scamps' "With All My Heart," and the Jewels' "Living From Day To Day."

No, not those Temptations. This Temptations were a vocal group from New York best known for the 1960 hit "Barbara". Issued on Goldisc Records, the song peaked on the Cash Box Magazine chart at #38 and on the Billboard Hot 100 at #29. The flip side song on Barbara was Someday.

The Story of the group begin as the Four Temptations, three years before. In 1957, Artie Ripp formed a vocal group with some others of his local neighborhood friends from Flushing, Mario Scarpa, Stu Silverman and Joe Tedesco. They signed in 1957 with ABC Records as back up group for ABC. They backed to Paul Anka on their ABC hit "Diana" and released Cathy as the Four Temptations.

Artie Ripp had already decided that he liked management more than singing, and went on to co-found Kama Sutra Records and then manage Billy Joel during the Piano Man's early career. Artie Ripp formed and managed this new group know as  The Temptations who consisted of Artie Maren, Artie Schlacman, Larry Schwartz and Neil Stevens also from Flushing,NY. Neil Stevens had already recorded a single with the Dee-Vines in 1958, "More And More" and "What Could Be Better" released by Brunswick Records, and Shortly after "Barbara" became a hit, Neil left to go solo.

The Remaining Temptations saw three releases before they broke up. Artie Ripp later became a great arranger and sound engineer. He worked on a lot of the girls group records and Brill Building sounds that came out of NYC from 1963-1968 or so.

Biography :

Vocal group from From Warwick High School, in Newport News, Virginia  composed by Gary Church, Melvin Beckner, Kay Brooks, Roslyn King and Brenda Robinson. In early 1960, Melvin Beckner wrote some songs like "All's Well and Fine", "Don't Say I Love You" and "Heartaches For Me". Warwick High's musical senior Mary Jane Cofer sponsored a concert with Melvin who sang the lead on his three songs , backed by three girls named The Mello-Tones Trio. The success was immediate and Melvin landed a recording session. In April 1961, Melvin and his singing partner, Gary Church, recorded "I Know Why Dreamers Cry" and " Once In A Lifetimethe"  both written by Melvin in a recording session in Norfolk produced by Frank Guida.

They went over to Norfolk twice a week for three weeks to work on it.  The last session, when they really got it, took from seven o'clock at night to four o'clock in the morning,  And some time later the single will be released as The Brothers Kennedy on the Legrand Label. In 1964, the single  was also released credited to The The Hamptons.  Four months later, Melvin Beckner, Gary Church and the Mello-Tones Trio; Kay Brooks, Roslyn King and Brenda Robinson Have a new recording session. Under the name of the Concertones, Legrand released "Just One More Time" and "All Is Well And Fine". Melvin also wrote "Time Ole Story", the flip side of Quarter To Three for Gary (U.S.) Bonds.
